چکیده

We propose a generic mechanism for the formation of narrow rings in rotating systems. For this purpose we use a system of discs rotating about a common center lying well outside the discs. A discussion of this system shows that narrow rings occur, if we assume noninteracting particles. A saddle-center bifurcation is responsible for the relevant appearance of elliptic regions in phase space, that will generally assume ring shapes in the synodic frame, which will suffer a precession in the sidereal frame. Finally we discuss possible applications of this mechanism and find that it may be relevant for planetary rings as well as for semiclassical considerations.

Braided rings: a scattering billiard model

We introduce a billiard scattering model consisting of two non-overlapping rotating discs in the context of the formation and structural properties of planetary rings. We show that due to the arrangement of the symmetric periodic orbits, stable orbits are found which in the configuration space lead to the appearance of patterns qualitatively similar to planetary rings. Rings associated with dif...

Strands and braids in narrow planetary rings: A scattering system approach

We address the occurrence of narrow planetary rings and some of their structural properties, in particular when the rings are shepherded. We consider the problem as Hamiltonian scattering of a large number of non-interacting massless point particles in an effective potential. Using the existence of stable motion in scattering regions in this set up, we describe a mechanism in phase space for th...

Irregular Scattering of Particles Confined to Ring-Bounded Cavities

The classical motion of a Ii"ee particle that scatters elastically from ring-bounded cavities is analyzed nunaerically. When the ring is a smooth circle the scattering follows a regular and periodic pattern. However, for rings composed of N scatrefers the Ilow is irregular, of Lyapunov type. The Lyapunov exponent is found to depend logarithmically with N, which is consistent with the theoretica...

Quantum Chaotic Scattering and Resistance Fluctuations in Mesoscopic Junctions

Using the semiclassical approximation we calculate the quantum fluctuations of the two-dimensional electronic scattering cross-section from three hard disks in a magnetic field. The three-disk billiard is a schematic model for a three-lead mesoscopic (ballistic) junction. As the magnetic field increases the classical trajectories in the three-disk billiard undergo a hyperbolic±non-hyperbolic tr...
